The software alliance group, BSA, recently released its 2nd annual scorecard on global cloud computing, which ranks 24 of the world’s top players in the industry in order of the most prepared to develop the technology on a worldwide range. Making up at least eighty percent of the world’s Information Technology market, these 24 nations each represent a diversified approach on cloud computing, positioning some for progress and some for stagnation.

Among the criteria that affect a nation’s overall “cloud climate,” in the opinion of the BSA, are: its stance on user privacy, free-trade, cybercrime, cybersecurity, and broadband network.

Chris Hopfensperger, technology policy counsel at the BSA, critiqued the progress made since the release of last year’s global cloud-computing scorecard, calling it “patchy” but stating that the BSA remains hopeful that soon enough the good laws will eventually outnumber the bad ones that inhibit the expansion of reliable cloud hosting technologies.

Who Won the Top Spot?

For the second time in as many years, Japan has scored the best marks with the BSA. The BSA calls Japan’s cloud climate the “friendliest environment for cloud providers” thanks to the country’s rate of broadband adoption as well as its increasingly rigid provisions against cybercrime and commitment to user security and privacy.

Coming in at 2nd and 3rd were Australia and the US, respectively, after the US pushed Germany down to 4th from last year. The decision-makers at the BSA justified the switch in a statement that US cloud providers have made significant advances in the enhancement of US-based cloud technologies. The switch is at this time not owed to improvements in policies made by the US government.

Top 5 heavy hitters:

1. Japan

2. Australia

3. United States

4. Germany

5. Singapore

Germany’s drop to 4th is blamed on “potentially restrictive privacy laws, protectionist policies,” while Singapore leapt up five slots thanks to a recent data privacy law that took effect since the previous scorecard was released in 2012.

Who Scored the Lowest Points?

The 5 worst countries for cloud hosting providers are:

1. South Africa

2. Indonesia

3. Brazil

4. Thailand

5. Vietnam

These five countries scored low in the topics of data and user privacy, free-trade policies (or lack of), data security, and their inability or lack of cooperation in conforming with global cloud standards.

What Is Hosting And Why Do You Need It?

Having a good web host is key if you want your website to be up and running at all times. When your site is down, it makes it hard to make sales or answer customer questions. Therefore, you need a host that is going to give you great support whenever you need it. However, the question remains, what is a web host and why do you need one at all?

A Web Host Hosts the Server Where Your Site Resides

Your site needs a server that will store of all its data. The company that runs the server is called the host. While many servers are shared servers, you can get a dedicated server or a cloud server to help your site run faster and more efficiently. The type of server that you choose depends on how much you have to spend and how much space that you need.

Which Server Type Is Right For My Business?

Small businesses or people running an ecommerce store from their homes should consider using a shared server. For many small companies, a sharing a server with other companies allows you to have your own domain for as little as a penny per month. Larger companies or small businesses that are trying to grow at a rapid rate should consider a dedicated server because they are easier to scale as your company grows.

Why Are Cloud Servers A Good Choice?

Cloud servers can be a good choice for those who are looking to access their site from wherever they go. Instead of having to be at the office to access the administrative features of their site, it is possible to access your site from wherever you are. Additionally, it is easier to create extra copies of your server. This is helpful if you don’t want to lose information due to a natural disaster or due to human error.

How Do You Find A Good Web Host?

There are several ways that you can find a good host for your site. Among your options are:

1) Looking For Reviews Online

2) Asking Friends And Family For Suggestions

3) Using Trial And Error Until You Find Something That You Like

The good news is that most hosts will offer a free trial period or are priced so low that you can afford to buy several domains without putting much of your money at risk. If you have a blog or plan on adding a blog to your website, you should find a host that supports WordPress. While you will have to pay for the host, running WordPress on a site on your domain is free.

Your website is not going to be as effective as it could be without the right host. You need to find a company that offers great support, has reliable servers and gives you multiple server options. Although there are many hosting options, you will find the one that works for your company through trial and error until something works for you.

New Data Storage Technology Can Minimize Waste, Save Money

Molecular science just got real, assuming you’re not already a molecular physicists. Then you’ve been a fan for years. IT reps across the world are taking notice of a new and promising technology called molecular memory. The technology has got the trappings of science fiction, but it’s real and it could mean that data centers could be storing at least 1000TB of data within a square inch of space, maximizing critical real estate within their facilities while saving money on energy usage.

The molecule used in the research, which was conducted in an MIT lab, originated in India by chemists at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER). It’s an impressive prospect that, if nothing else, will progress the discovery of even more options other than traditional data storage solutions.

How Does Molecular Memory Work?

It’s accomplished by tampering with the magnetic state of the specially designed molecule. Each individual molecule takes the place of a binary one or a zero depending on its state of magnetism. The result is store more data in a limited amount of space.

How It’s Done

The MIT researchers have made critical discoveries in the manufacturing stages of the procedure, which previously demanded added materials, that will do away with excess costs while hopefully refining the device to sustain cooler temperatures in data center facilities. The ability to keep the memory devices cool with less cost will be a definite attraction to IT reps, who are required to allot a great deal of time and money to that end to guard their company data and operations.

What Next?

Jagadeesh Moodera led the research team at MIT and predicts that workable storage devices modeled after the science of molecular memory will be available as replacements for traditional SSD systems within the next decade. Consequent benefits of the technology will not only be a more efficient use of hard drive space, but will also be an environment conscious use of energy to power and cool the systems in data centers.

As the technology is successfully adopted by data center operators in numerous quarters, their goals for better performing hardware and a smarter usage of resources are destined to be reached. Additionally, Moodera is hopeful that his research will promote a sustained interest in memory solutions like this one.
